2008 UNC Black Alumni Reunion Schedule

Friday, Nov. 7

8:30 � 9:30 a.m.
Coffee and bagels with the Chancellor, Campus Y
Chancellor Holden Thorp '86 will greet and host you as we kick off Homecoming/RAMpage weekend at the historic Campus Y. Stop by and congratulate Chancellor Thorp as he takes on his new ambassador role for Carolina.

 

9 a.m.
Golf Tournament,
Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club (format: best ball)
Enjoy networking, fellowship and phenomenal golf as we take it to them at Duke. The 18-hole championship course opened in 1957 and is the only course in the region designed by respected golf course architect Robert Trent Jones and redesigned by his son Rees in 1994. The course consistently receives top rankings in Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and the Zagat Survey. This year's outing will include prizes for first, second and third place teams.  Prizes also will be awarded for closest to pin and longest drive. Whether a new golfer or one who would like to have formal training, this year's tournament will have something for everyone. Fee includes practice balls, greens fee, cart fee, breakfast and lunch. A portion ($25) of the golf fee will benefit the Light on the Hill Society Scholarship and is tax deductible

Campus Walking Tour: The Old, the New, the Blue!  FULL CAPACITY

Starting from the steps of South Building with gorgeous panoramic views of Polk Place, David Brown '75, senior associate editor of the Carolina Alumni Review, will lead you on a journey through campus highlighting favorite landmarks, recently renovated buildings, laboratories and even new residence halls. University officials will greet guests within certain buildings. Our tour will conclude at Rams Head Dining Hall.

Now in its 90th year, the Department of Dramatic Arts and PlayMakers Repertory Company are housed in one of the liveliest and most exciting buildings on campus. Join McKay Coble '79, '81 (MFA), department chair, and Jeffrey Meanza '04 (MFA), PlayMakers rep, on a behind-the-scenes tour, and learn about the profoundly important role the performing arts play at Carolina.

Connecting Carolina to the World -- FedEx Global Education Center

Niklaus Steiner '88, Director of the Office of International Affairs, and a panel of students who have taken part in UNC study abroad programs worldwide will share the impact this experience has made on their lives, their paths of study at UNC and future career plans.  Enjoy seeing one of Carolina's newest and greenest buildings � you may even pick up lunch at the Global Café and eat on the rooftop sustainable garden.

Join James R. Leutze, award-winning former professor of history at UNC and past chancellor of UNC-Wilmington, as we discuss issues we face today including high gas prices, mortgage issues and the failing economy. How are we going to survive? What's going on?

Partner Lunch: Globalizing Carolina's Future Leaders, George Watts Hill Alumni Center, Alumni Halls I and II

The challenges facing our present and future workforces are unique. The rapid growth of the global economy raises challenging questions such as: What is globalization and what does it mean to you as a college graduate? How will you fare in the workplace with your current level of education? How do you become more marketable in an ever-changing economy? The Partner Lunch will provide Carolina undergraduates the opportunity to learn more about globalization.Additionally, students will interact with alumni and corporate sponsors. Attire: Business.

Carolina Basketball Memories, Carolina Basketball Museum, Williamson Center 
(adjacent to the Smith Center and Koury Natatorium) FULL CAPACITY

Hear behind-the-scenes stories about the creation of the new Carolina Basketball Museum and enjoy an hour-long tour of the museum with major concept contributors. Three panelistsSteve Kirschner, Fred Kiger '74, '77 (MAT) and Matt Bowers '94will share their stories of their roles in the creation of the museum. They also will  be available inside the museum during the tour to answer any questions. Participants will enjoy a special video of the 2007-08 basketball season.

Black Pioneers Hospitality Suite, Friday Center, Windflower Room

African-American alumni from 1952-70 will host a hospitality suite to reconnect with classmates. Join them for fellowship and refreshments.

 

3 � 7 p.m.
Destiny Bus, Smith Center

The Destiny Bus, a mobile experimental laboratory from the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, will be parked at the Dean E. Smith Center. Donning aprons, goggles and Carolina blue gloves, children of all ages are provided the opportunity to feel like real scientists � and to see that science can be fun.

 

3 � 8 p.m.
Registration/Welcome Reception, Friday Center Atrium

The Friday Center is your one-stop shop for BAR event tickets and reunion souvenirs. BAR committee members and the GAA staff will be available to answer questions, provide updated information about Homecoming/RAMpage events and to make sure you have everything needed to have a great weekend. 

 

3:30 � 5:30 p.m.
Carolina Basketball Museum Tour

The museum chronicles the history of UNC basketball and includes nearly 500 authentic artifacts, hundreds of photographs and videos of various players, coaches, championships and historic moments.

 

4 � 7 p.m.
True Blue Fanfare, Smith Center
Let your True Blue colors shine as you gather with other fans to celebrate the pride, loyalty and strong tradition of Carolina athletics. In true fanfare, the Marching Tar Heels, cheerleaders and Rameses will provide a fun and festive atmosphere. Tar Heel Sports Network color analyst Jones Angell '01 will serve as our emcee for the evening. Bring your Tar Heel spirit as we meet and celebrate Carolina teams. Enjoy complementary carnival games, face painting, giveaways, food and other activities.

 

5 � 6 p.m. 
Campus Bus Tour: The Old, the New, the Blue! CANCELLED
Your host David Brown '75 will greet you at the Smith Center where you'll board a private bus for a scenic tour of north, south, east and west campus. This entire tour will be conducted on the bus with amplified sound. Tour begins and ends at the Smith Center. Specific pick-up and drop-off details will be confirmed in registration packet.

Light on the Hill Society Scholarship Awards Banquet, Friday Center, Trillium Room

Join us as we honor this year's Light on the Hill Society Scholars and Black Alumni Reunion award recipients.  for information regarding table sponsorships. Attire: Cocktail, black-tie optional (directions).

This year we are delighted to offer you a hospitality room to relax and reacquaint yourself with classmates from the past. We'll enjoy smooth jazz, light refreshments and you are more than welcome to provide your own spirits.

Tar Heel Kids and Teen Camps, George Watts Hill Alumni Center, Royall Room

Allow your child to experience some of the best Carolina has to offer. Camp activities will be held on Friday and Saturday and you may sign up for one or both days. Kids Camp activities target kids in grades K-5. Teen camp activities target teens in grades 6-8. All camp activities will take place on campus and each camp will have separate activities.

 

7 p.m.
Women's Basketball vs. Premier Players, Dean E. Smith Center

While Carmichael Auditorium undergoes a multi-million dollar renovation, Coach Sylvia Hatchell and the Tar Heels will make their home at the Smith Center. Preview the four-time ACC champions as they begin their march to a fifth straight ACC title.

 

10 p.m. � 1 a.m.
Celebration of Classes, George Watts Hill Alumni Center, Alumni Halls I and II

Come jump-start the weekend with the old-school sounds of the '70s, '80s, and '90s with DJ Whitted. Whether you are celebrating a milestone anniversary or approaching one, you are guaranteed to enjoy the BAR unity, energy and music of the night. Milestone class photos will be taken by the BAR photographer (classes of '78, '83, '88, '93, '98 and '03). Tickets purchased before the registration deadline will include parking validation for up to (3) hours.

 

10 p.m. � 2 a.m.
Carolina First Friday, University Mall

Join us for the hottest party of the weekend as we switch things up for a fresh, new look. Come out and party until the early hours of the morning while the DJ plays the best of hip-hop and R&B � old and new. Start the weekend off the right way with old classmates and friends. This event is co-sponsored by University Mall.

 

Saturday, Nov. 8

 

Time: 9 a.m.
Bell Tower Climb and Tar Heel Town, Bell Tower
The Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower is one of Carolina's most beloved landmarks. Take this opportunity to climb four levels and enjoy a campus view few get to experience. Arrive early to enjoy the sound of the Marching Tar Heels and cheer on the football team as they make their way to Kenan Stadium during the "Old Well Walk." You'll also find Rameses and complimentary face painting.

 

Time: 9 a.m.
Tailgate Party, Bell Tower

Gather with classmates and friends prior to the football game as we enjoy good food, the Marching Tar Heels and other pregame activities at the Bell Tower. The menu will include fried chicken, fried fish, baked beans, green beans, potato salad, cole slaw, rolls, hushpuppies, dessert and beverages. Music provided by 93.9 KISSFM.

UNC vs. Georgia Tech, Kenan Stadium SOLD OUT

Let's TURN IT BLUE and cheer Coach Butch Davis and the Tar Heels to victory as they take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The BAR block location is lower level, section 131 on the south side next to gate 7

UNC vs. UNC Pembroke, Dean Smith Center
Come preview Coach Roy Williams '72 and the 2008-09 Tar Heels as they open the season with an exhibition game against UNC Pembroke.

 

3 � 6 p.m.

African American alumni from the classes of 1952-70 will host a hospitality suite to reconnect with classmates. Join them for fun and refreshments.

Black Pioneers Dinner, Sheraton Imperial, Imperial Salons VI & VII

African-American alumni from the classes of 1952-70 will reminisce and celebrate their time as students in Chapel Hill.

8 � 11 p.m.
Seasoned Tar Heel Reception, Sheraton Imperial, Crystal Coast Room

This vintage gathering has become a special time for alumni from the '70s to come together, to remember, to laugh and to embrace the history we all share. As more Tar Heels become "seasoned" the ranks are growing from year to year. Come join the fun and fellowship that is truly special for all and a great lead-in to the Saturday night party. Join "seasoned ones" and many others that shared a laugh, a party, a tear and other great experiences. See Harry Jones '72, Angela Bryant '73,  Jon "Bushy" Regis '73, Allen Mask '74, Moses Parker '74, Phil McAlpin '75, Fay Mitchell '76, Calvin Blanton '76, Paula Newsome '77 and many other "seasoned folks" who continued the journey of Carolina's African-American alumni and pioneered the Black Alumni Reunion.

Carolina Alumni Party and Casino Night, Sheraton Imperial, Imperial Ballroom

It's not just a party, it's an event. All "seasoned" and "fresh-faced" alumni will come out to the Carolina Alumni Party and Casino Night. Upon entrance you will have the chance to win a number of great prizes and even more chances on the casino tables. Congratulations to last year's winners of jetBlue tickets to New York � Nadine Madden Russell '90 and David Squires '80. There will be delightful hors d'oeuvres and plenty of cash bars. As always, the dance floor will be jumping as the DJ spins the latest and the greatest R&B, soul and hip-hop hits.


Sunday, Nov. 9

Inspirational Service, Sheraton Imperial, Empire AB

This is one service you do not want to miss. The program will include performances by the current UNC Gospel Choir (formerly the BSM Gospel Choir), BSM Gospel Choir Alumni and an inspirational message by Milton Lewis, former campus ministry spiritual leader during the late 70s. No registration required.
