YO:Durham (Year of Opportunity for Durham Teens) is the newest initiative of Durham Congregations In Action. Based on a successful Boston, MA program, the program will annually serve 30 - 40 students for a 52-week period. The YO:Durham Program includes a paid six-week Summer Career Academy, team mentoring for the entire year, and a paid job internship during the school year.

GOALS

· Increased rate of high school graduation

· Increased enrollment in post-secondary education

· Increased workplace preparedness

· Decrease in number of students appearing in the criminal justice system

PARTICIPANTS

· 15 – 17 years old

· Enrolled in high school or GED program

· Male and female

· All races

· All faiths

· At-risk in at least one of these categories:

1. Eligible for free or reduced lunch

2. A sibling or parent incarcerated

3. History of truancy or suspension

4. Academically delayed or at risk of retention

5. Environmental or home risk factor

 
 
 
 

 

DDI Looking to Hire Government Relations Director

DOWNTOWN DURHAM, INC., a private non-profit organization charged with the revitalization of downtown Durham, is seeking a GOVERNMENT RELATIONS DIRECTOR.

The candidate must be able to handle multiple assignments, work as a member of a team, work independently, have knowledge of local government process and issues, be a self-starter, have strong organizational and consensus building skills, experience in representing the interests of an organization, have "hands-on" computer experience, and excellent communication skills. Knowledge of the Durham community is desirable.

A college degree, preferably in public policy, public administration, business or political science is desirable, but not required.

The candidate will work on projects related to public policy, regulatory issues, safety, appearance, and economic development. The candidate will advocate on behalf of DDI, build positive relationships with elected officials and professional local government staff, and represent DDI on various study committees that are established to address downtown issues. The position will require attendance at meetings that occur outside the regular office hours.

Starting salary: $32,000 - $40,000, with attractive benefit package.

Durham Young Professionals has been invited to join the Nasher Museum's Young Friends for an event celebrating the opening of Golden Belt's Room 100 – a contemporary art gallery in downtown Durham – on Wednesday, July 30 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The renovated Golden Belt facility is one of downtown's recent renovations and will offer a combination of retail, residential and commercial space. See the attached PDF for additional information.
