What's up with couples fighting this week? Juanita Bynum, Televangelist and author who preaches at a Queens church, was beat up pretty badly by her husband outside an Atlanta hotel. According to newsday.com, "Thomas W. Weeks III struck Juanita Bynum at about 5 a.m. Wednesday, beating her badly enough to require medical treatment. They were talking about a reconciliation. They got into an argument. In the process of the argument, her husband walked out to the parking lot area, turned back around and started to choke Miss Bynum. As he choked her, he pushed her down to the ground and started to kick her and...

...also stomp on her." :::Sigh::: poor thing. The crazy thing is, Weeks is also a minister, founder of the Global Destiny Churches. Anyway, Juanita Bynum has pressed charges on Weeks and hopefully he'll never be able to get close to her again.......Thomas W. Weeks III turned himself in yesterday after beating up his wife, Juanita Bynum, in a hotel parking lot a couple days ago. Weeks has been charged with felony aggravated assault and for making terrorists threats...

Juanita's Beat Down Be a Lesson

1 In reading a comment by fellow blogger Sonnyredd just now, I was prompted to write this post. Sonnyredd commented that ladies might want to consider that having the last word might not always be the best idea. This in light of the fact that most reports about the Juanita Bynum beat down allege that she followed Weeks (her husband) out into the parking lot of the hotel they were visiting, perhaps to continue the discussion (read, argument) about their separation after which he cracked open a can of whoop ass. Oh, apparently he turned himself in this morning........

Part 2

Fannielouhamer I'm going to try to make this my last post on the Juanita Bynum beat down, but in reading this Atlanta Journal Constitution article by Rosalind Bentley I feel compelled to impart one more lesson I think we can all learn from this drama. While you don't have to tell the world all of your damn business, certainly don't make your situation out to be more than it really is.

I was telling Spice earlier today, if there's one thing any of my friends can say about me it's that I don't try to hype up my relationships. I may not tell them all of the dirty details at the offset, but I certainly don't try to act like I'm being courted by Prince Charming when the reality is that his evil twin brother Ike (think, Turner) is the man I'm really seeing.

Even on this blog, I don't know any of you personally, as in speak with on the phone every day or several times a week, but I still "keep it real" about what I'm going through. It makes me feel over-exposed at times, but it is what it is. Why lie?....

A Prayer for Juanita Bynum

1 Bynum and her estranged husband, Thomas W. Weeks III, the founder of Global Destiny churches, met at Renaissance Concourse Hotel near Atlanta's airport to try to reconcile, police said. About 4 a.m., they fought in the parking lot until a hotel bellman pulled Weeks off. "She was bruised up and battered," Officer Ronald Campbell said. "She had purple bruising around her neck and upper torso." No charges had been filed by Wednesday night against Weeks, who left the scene according to police. Bynum, a Pentecostal evangelist who lives in Hempstead, N.Y., has administrative offices in Waycross. The former homemaker, hairdresser and flight attendant got a break when Bishop T.D. Jakes invited her to speak at one of his conferences several years ago.

Her 2002 wedding to Weeks, who started the Global Destiny churches nationwide, was televised and, according to media reports, featured a gown with a bodice covered in crystals and a 7.76-carat diamond ring. Her dream wedding led to a nightmarish marriage. Only God knows how many black eyes and bruised ribs preceded this recent torment.

The high praise and power messages of the mega-Church movement often conceal what happens behind the closed doors of those placed on thrones to be praised by the people deprived of examples of righteous living. In the midst of their declarations of what used to be; the truth underlying it all is things aren't what they appear to be.

The gloom that comes with this sad story of a prominent religious spokesperson and her estranged husband, who leads a church, are the days spent before the people smiling, promoting faith, advocating the message of joy, granting comfort to those who come to listen, who come to purchase a CD or DVD- while hurting inside.

TasteVine

Technorati del.icio.us Digg Reddit Netscape YahooMyWeb NewsVine Furl StumbleUpon Fark Slashdot SphereIt Ma.gnolia

Thanks for taking the time to visit us and learn a little more about TasteVine. While normally we would shy away from the tech-speak when talking about our sites, it is such an integral part of what makes TasteVine so powerful, that it is hard to avoid.

The truth is, most "recommendation" engines are terrible. They give you generic recommendations based on democratic voting systems that are just not accurate. Some try to use complicated algorithms based on a history of ratings, while others ask you bland questions like "do you like sweet" or "do you like merlot". The problem with these recommendations engines is that they ask the wrong questions about the wrong things.

To make good recommendations, we need to know two things: what you like and how you understand it. Two people may like a movie, but one thought it was "funny" and the other thought it was "moving". One may like and another may hate a movie because they both thought it was exceptionally graphic.

To figure these two things out accurately, two people must try the same thing, describe it, and rate it. Which is exactly what we do. We have selected 12 wines from the most popular varietals for you to try, describe, and rate. We use these to create your "tasteID", our unique identifier that helps us find people across the web who think about wine exactly the same way you do. Not just what you like, but why you like.

Below I have listed off the 12 wines. Of course, you can choose to try no wines, some wines, all the wines. Many of them you have probably tasted already, or might have in your fridge. We selected the most popular, inexpensive, readily available wines, so that you can easily get your hands on one and set up a tasteID.

The tasteID Wines by Ruarri Rogan

Yellowtail Shiraz

Red wine has long been the drink of choice for poets, playwrights, musicians and eccentrics - and in the wildfire spread of Yellowtail, the revelation of Red Wine's magic is fast catching on as the younger market seeks a product that is price equivalent to beer - and not as fattening, and potentially even healthy. Yellowtail Shiraz is quite simply delicious to most beginner's palates, and its no surprise that this style of wine won the title of 'fruit bomb' quite a while back. However, amongst many college students, who may never use the term 'fruit bomb', another name is catching on in popularity: crazy juice. Indeed it's because of Yellowtail's high-sugar and warming sensation that it appeals to both the male and female market. Combine men and women in a confined space and dose them up with lots of fruit sugar and alcohol in the form of cheap and delicious Yellowtail Shiraz magnums, and as each person sees their way to the end of another bottle, sooner or later you'll realize that the nickname 'crazy juice' not only make sense, but it's the truth.

Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc

Now we're talking' this is real tasty wine. I'm big on flavour and mouth sensation and that's what NZ/ SB is all about - sensation. It hooks you by the nose with sometimes pungent and other times tropical aromas which range in description from pink grapefruit, to green pepper and even - cat's pee. On the mouth they race around like a live wire on the palate, and on the finish they leave your mouth refreshed and almost 'cleansed.'. Guys don't often go for white wine - but Sauvignon Blanc could really change that. Chard's can be a bit too rich and dessert like for men, while Pinot Grigio is perhaps a little too thin. New World Sauvignon Blanc, and New Zealand especially, is a firecracker - completely different from region to region and always satisfying. It's a really great varietal for someone who is just starting to drink wine as a hobby, because it's affordable, usually high in quality and is prone to drastic change from place to place. Nobilo usually comes in at about $8.00, and it's a mystery how they bring it in from so far, at such great quality and sell it so cheap. Nobilo boasts the best Marlborough characteristics like wild lemon grass with light whiffs of pink grapefruit, and has a brilliant fruity yet crisp palate. As it comes with a screwtop this wine is great as an impulse buy for an impromptu picnic or drink with a friend........

Afrobella — The " Professional" Prejudice

1

Since that Glamour magazine editor's quote hit the streets last week, yours truly has been swamped with e mails and Ask Afrobella questions. Like this one, yesterday!

Robin asks: Bella, I'm waiting on the corporate hair discussion. I'm in a rut with this issue as we speak. I am looking for a new job in Accounting but I am also letting my relaxer grow out. I have been either wearing twist outs, braids, or just slicked back into a ponytail. Many of my friends and fam insist that I should straighten it out before interviews. However, I don't think that I should be limited to straight hair in the corporate world neither am I particularly interested in working for a company that would have me conform this way. I'm looking for styles that aren't intimidating without having to conform and flat iron it into submission. Please Help!!

Lay the flat-iron down because help is on the way, Robin! But I must confess, I feel kind of like a fish out of water even addressing this. Here's why.

1 I grew up in a country where I always saw men and women with natural hairstyles working in professional capacities. Maybe back in the Seventies when Rastafarianism seemed like a relatively new phenomenon, things were different. But as an Eighties baby in Trinidad, I grew up knowing teachers, shop clerks, my parents and siblings co-workers… natural hair never seemed like an impediment to a job, to me. My high school principal had a fro. My flyest high school teacher — shout out to Miss Stroud — wore a low 'fro, and so did one of Trinidad's coolest newscasters back in the day on Panorama. Minister Penelope Beckles wears her hair in a short afro style, and Trinidad's Member of Parliament, Fitzgerald Hinds, has awesomely long and handsome locks. (If there is any hairstyle that's been discriminated against in Trinidad, it's dreadlocks. MP Hinds has retaliated against instances of ridiculous discrimination — like when St. Charles High School sent home a 12-year-old Rastafarian girl because of her hairstyle back in 2004. Hinds has also spoken eloquently before parliament, regarding the unfair and discriminatory practice of cutting off a Rastafarian's locks when they are imprisoned).

So I never really thought natural hair in the workplace could be percieved as a politically motivated "no no." The concept of everyone having to conform to a Eurocentric standard of "normal" hair and beauty never occurred to me, when it came down to getting a job. I assumed it was all about being smart and qualified enough.

When I was making the decision to go back to school for my MFA in creative writing, my most conservative friend was horrified. "You mean you don't want to make money?" he gasped. Of COURSE I do — but I'm a creative girl who just never planned to work in a traditional office, is all. And I haven't. The office I work in now is allabout Casual Friday, every day. I have a co-worker who's been known to wander the halls wearing a bathrobe over his clothes. Seriously. I typically wear jeans and a cute top to work, flats, and my hair can be as big and crazy as I want. Recently I wore it in a ponytail after months of wash n' go 'froliciousness, and my editor was like — what happened? Did you cut your hair? So I can't speak from my personal experience about natural hair being regarded as anything less than acceptable. I wouldn't want to work somewhere that made me feel any other way.

Because I couldn't relate to these corporate mandates, I decided to ask the one person I knew who was in charge of hiring people. My dad. He's a human resources manager, and he practically did a spit take when I called to ask him about this Glamour issue....

This week I decided to go and refresh one of my most needed accessories, EYEGLASSES! Glasses are one of those accessories that people don't put as much time and care into as they need to. If you were wearing one jacket every day for a year, would you make sure that jacket was the dopest, FLYEST, freshest, and most fantastic thing in your wardrobe? Well that's how I feel about my face wear. Every six months, I go and treat myself to a new pair of eyeglasses......

♥Black♥ Pearls Model Tribute Part 1

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket In my opinion no one from ANTM has had as much success as Eva the Diva. She is a true model because she is a complete chameleon and she is strutting her way to style and fashion icon also. Eva is the host ofBET J's show My Model Looks Better Than Your Model, where 12 known and unknown stylists compete against eachother for the ultimate prize-the opportunity to style Eva the Diva in a pictorial for TRACE magazine. I wish I was on that show because that is definitely an opportunity to pick her brain and network, network, network. Let's take a look at why Eva the Diva was named "The Diva", beginning with her stunning head shots:

Shemekia released two more CDs: 2000's Grammy©-nominated WICKED and 2002's TALKING TO STRANGERS (produced by Dr. John), and in that short period of time, collected five Blues Music Awards, a Grammy© nomination, five Living Blues Awards, and was honored with the coveted "Talent Deserving Wider Recognition" Award by the DownBeat Critics' Poll. Rock legend Robert Plant called her "the next Tina Turner." Shemekia has already had a lifetime's worth of career highlights, including performances on national television, appearances in films, and sharing stages with some of the biggest names in the music world.
