The family that plays together stays together. The Barnettes, a band comprised of three sisters and a brother (Elesha Renee', Adrienne, Kristen and Rufus) have been making music together for years, but the brand of music they tote now is a long cry from the Mozart and Beethoven they grew up on. Elesha Renee', Adrienne and Kristen played cello, violin and viola respectively from elementary age on. Along with Rufus on percussion, the quartet performed the classics at various functions in and around the Carolinas for years. Having never officially adopted a quartet name they were always simply introduced as the Barnettes. So, when they decided to embark upon the project "Four Green Walls" going by the Barnettes came natural. Read More

There is no love more sincere than the love of food – George Bernard Shaw

Let's face it - we can all go a week without watching our favorite show, everyone can deal with the loss of a treasured piece of clothing, stolen cars can always be replaced and we can all deal with small amounts of distance from our friends and loved ones. Nothing however, besides obvious things like oxygen can be more important than food. So one must wonder, if eating is something we do regularly - then surely it's something we should learn about. If you're doing okay financially it makes little sense that you should know everything there is to know about sport, have a good fashion sense, be geographically and politically aware - and know next to nothing about food.

Few people understand how easy it is to make a really good casserole, put together a curry evening, whip up a quick stir-fry, bake good brownies or make a really wholesome stew. On top of that - with a good play list, an open bottle of wine and a friend or partner to assist the process - cooking is an enjoyable act in and of itself (just try avoid having more than a glass of wine before the guests arrive.) Emeril Lagasse, Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, Rachael Ray and Nigella Lawson have all done an unbelievable job of making cooking reachable. But insofar as actually getting people to take an active part in their own culinary adventure, there's no one more influential than a friend..... READ MORE

Google.com Most Popular Mobile Site

Google.com topped the list of the most popular mobile Web sites in the both United States and the United Kingdom for the second month in a row, according to M:Metrics. Search, news and social networking sites dominated the list during March. In the U.S., Yahoo.com, MSN.com, Microsoft.com and Live.com rounded out the top five domains, while in the U.K. BBC.co.uk, Orange.co.uk, Three.co.uk and O2.co.uk garnered the most hits.

Locate Family and Friends on Your Sprint Phone

Sprint will partner with loopt to provide a social mapping service that allows you to find friends, connect with friends, and tag places and events. The service is currently available through Boost Mobile, which is a Sprint MVNO. With this announcement, Sprint will be launching the service on its own handsets . The service will initially be available on 42 handsets. Loopt allows you to see the location of friends and family on your mobile handset or from any web browser. Loopt allows you to set up alerts, so you can be notified when friends are in the same area. You will also be able to communicate with them through the application. For example, after being alerted that a friend is in close proximity to you, you can send them a text saying "I see you are in my area, let's meet for lunch". As mentioned, the service is currently only available on Boost. It should be available soon from Sprint. You can still sign up early on the loopt website. The cost of the services is $3 per month.

The New Republic... Obama Recalls Memories Of JFK

7/23/2007: This article should be printed and sent to every home in Iowa, NH, Nevada, South Carolina, Nevada, and Florida) -Delroy

July 21, 2007 (The New Republic) This column was written by Ted Sorensen , who served as special counsel and adviser to President John F. Kennedy.
At first glance, the Democratic nominee for president in 1960, John Fitzgerald Kennedy — the millionaire Caucasian war hero for whom I worked for eleven golden years — seems notably different from the most interesting candidate for next year's nomination, Senator Barack Obama. But when does a difference make a difference? Different times, issues, and electors make any meaningful comparison unlikely. But the parallels in their candidacies are striking.

Fifty years ago, Kennedy and I embarked on a period in which we traveled to all 50 states in his long, uphill quest for the 1960 Democratic presidential nomination. He was, like Obama, a first-term U.S. senator. But he was not yet 40 years old, making Obama, already 45, a geezer by comparison.

At the time, Washington pundits assumed Kennedy had at least two insurmountable obstacles. The first was his lack of experience, especially compared with the senior statesmen also seeking that nomination — Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, Adlai Stevenson and Stuart Symington. Kennedy acknowledged that his age and inexperience would turn away some voters. Obama, though older than Kennedy, is similarly dismissed by some today. But Kennedy noted in one speech that "experience is like tail-lights on a boat which illuminate where we have been when we should be focusing on where we should be going."

Kennedy's second major obstacle was his heritage. Some said he had lost his chance to be president of the United States the day he was born — or, at least, the day he was baptized as a Roman Catholic. No Catholic had ever been elected president of the United States, and the overwhelming defeat suffered by the only Catholic nominated for that position, Governor Al Smith of New York in 1928, had persuaded subsequent Democratic leaders that it would be hopeless ever to risk that route again. The conviction that no Catholic could win was greater, in that less enlightened era 50 years ago, than the widespread assumption today that a black presidential candidate cannot win. The subtly bigoted phrase most often repeated in that election year — by former President Harry Truman, among others — was that 1960 was "too early" for a Catholic president, that the country was "not ready," and that Kennedy should be a "good sport" by settling for the vice presidency. No doubt Obama will hear — or has already heard — similar sentiments about the color of his skin... .READ MORE

Natural Attitudes — Taking the Plunge

The World According To Adaure

If you're considering going natural, I'd like to take this opportunity to dispel some falsehoods and address 50% of the Ask Afrobella questions I haven't gotten around to yet.

Natural hair isn't THAT hard to care for. Sure, transitioning can be traumatic if you're not used to having hair with its own will. But if you learn how to work with it, your rewards will be great. Imagine being able to go swimming and get your hair wet without worrying about ruining your do. Imagine having fun outdoors, or working out as often as you'd like because you don't have to worry about sweating out your roots. Imagine being able to wake up, wash, style, and go without spending an hour fussing with a flat iron. Imagine fluffing your fro or pulling back your locs and looking effortlessly cute after riding in a convertible. Imagine having healthy, strong hair that's nourished and undamaged by heat, harsh treatments and processes.

If you go natural, it can take a while to find the perfect product for you. I'm not even gonna lie. Not every thing works for everybody. My advice is, try as many at home hair recipes as you can. Motown Girl and Anita Grant and Nappturality are incredible resources of information. Do your research on any of the favorite product lines you hear the most about in natural hair circles, or on websites like Nappturality , or Motown Girl . Do price and ingredient comparisons on Anita Grant , Miss Jessie's , Carol's Daughter , Curls , Kinky Curly , Qhemet , and Oyin . Read product reviews. Educate yourself on ingredients and hair types. Don't go into transitioning without knowing to expect. Make sure you're good and ready and don't plan to turn back any time soon before you quit the fire cream cold turkey.

Natural hair can be gorgeous on everybody, but I think many women of color don't realize or don't believe that. Wearing a big mop of free form curls, a crown of twists, or a regal mane of locs is a guaranteed attention getter, and it takes confidence. I can't tell you how many people - men and women of varied races - have given me unsolicited compliments on my natural hair. Little kids love it. Why? Because it looks healthy and distinctive and cool, and I wear it with pride. I still get the classic Trini "what's happening with your hair" attitude when I get home, but it's no thing. Those comments always come from empty vessels. Respond with a warm smile, good humor, and a laid back attitude, and they'll slink away looking like fools. My friend Melissa calls it "taking the high road." It's hard to do, but I try my best.

I'd like to think that acceptance of natural hair is becoming more common. At least here in Miami, I'm noticing more and more black and Latina women wearing their hair in eye-catching au natural styles rather than using heat or chemicals to straighten their hair. Here's hoping that more and more women of color recognize that black skin is beautiful in all of its tints and tones. Natural black hair is gorgeous and good. And owning your heritage — celebrating the color of your skin, the shape of your nose, the curves of your body, the true texture of your hair — feels incredibly liberating. I couldn't recommend it more.
